EndNote desktop: FAQs and tips

The problem - TurnItIn, Moodle and EndNote incompatibility

The EndNote codes in a Word document are not compatible with TurnItIn or Moodle online submission.

Your in-text citations and reference list will appear only partially and distorted. This might lead some markers using Moodle's online marking system to mark you down for having incorrect referencing for all your citations and references.

The solution - Convert to plain text

Convert to plain text

It is possible to remove the dynamic connection between a Word document and its EndNote library. As a result, a stand-alone Word document will be created that preserves all your in-text citations and reference list formatting but contains no EndNote codes that will distort in Moodle.

It is recommended you do this first before submitting any online assessment documents.

To convert a document to plain text:

  1. Save any desired changes to the original document.
  2. In Word, select the EndNote tab then click Convert Citations and Bibliography.
  3. In the pull-down menu select Convert to Plain Text. A warning message will appear to tell you this will create a new document. Click OK to proceed.
  4. The new unlinked document will open in a new window. Save this document with a new name.
  5. You will have the new "unformatted" document for submission, and you will still have the old document linked to EndNote if you need ot make any changes.
