EndNote desktop: FAQs and tips

Installing a downloaded style into EndNote

  1. In many cases individual journals will provide an EndNote style file to download (example from the Royal Society for Chemistry - this is a .zip file containing multiple styles for different journals published by the RCS, individual style files will have to be manually extracted from the zip file before being added to EndNote).

In addition, EndNote provides several thousand customised styles for download through the Style Finder at https://endnote.com/downloads/styles

  2. If you have found a specific style in the EndNote online Style Finder, you can either click on the Download link on the results list, or click on the style or journal name for more information and a Download Style button on that informational page (screenshot of download button for illustration only, this is not a clickable button).

  3. Save the downloaded file somewhere you can find it again (many web browsers will, with default settings, automatically save it into your Downloads folder).

  4. Find the downloaded file with your file browser (default: Finder on a Mac, File Explorer on Windows [note: the yellow folder thingy, not Internet Explorer])
  5. Double-click on it to open it in EndNote, it will automatically open in the EndNote style editor.

  6. Use File menu > Save As to automatically save it in the correct location for EndNote to use.

This will automatically add " Copy" to the end of the style name
If you wish, rename it to remove the " Copy" and/or change the style name (e.g. add "downloaded" or "official")

  7. Close the style editor.

  8. With an EndNote library open, use the drop-down style selector (Summary tab, above the reference preview - you might have to click the teal chevron in the lower right corner to reveal the reference preview) and choose Select Another Style...

You might also need to select the style in existing Word documents (in the EndNote tab of the Word toolbar ribbon).
