EndNote desktop: FAQs and tips

Add the FootNote tool to your toolbar

Add the Footnote icon to Word's Quick Access toolbar to quickly add footnotes for footnote-based referencing styles (e.g. Chicago).

(Note: Adding footnotes is a Word feature, not an EndNote feature).

1. Click the Customize icon, then click More Commands from the drop-down menu.

Find and select Footnote

Click the Add button

Click OK

You can now add a footnote in your document at any time by clicking the Insert Footnote icon in the Quick Access Toolbar.

Inserting a footnote without the Quick Access Toolbar

If you have not added the Insert Footnote icon to the Quick Access Toolbar (see above), then you can add a footnote by either:

1. Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+F (Mac: Cmd+Alt/Opt+F)

2. Change to the References toolbar in Word, click Insert Footnote

Inserting the footnote citation

  1. Insert a footnote in the Word document (see above). Word will automatically move you into the footnote area.
  2. Change to the EndNote toolbar in Word.
  3. Click the Insert Citation button (the top part, with the icon/picture, do not click the words on the bottom part).
  4. Type in a word, or part of a word, or part of an author's name, etc.
  5. Click Find
  6. Select one or more references from the search results.
  7. Click the Insert button.

Your footnote citation will be inserted and, if the style requires it (e.g. Chicago), the reference will be added to the reference list at the end of the document.

EndNote knows how to use subsequent short form footnote citations in Chicago, use of Ibid., etc.
