Direct use of GenAI output must be cited in the usual manner according to your chosen style, for example:
(Bozkurt, 2024; UNSW Sydney, 2023)
If you are allowed to use the output of GenAI tools in your assessment task or research, you need to appropriately reference all direct use of AI-generated content such as information, text, code, and images. Failure to reference this AI-generated content can result in academic misconduct.
ChatGPT and other generative AI tools are non-recoverable, meaning that a reference will not link to the actual source and there is no archive of the content produced that others can access. Current advice varies according to the referencing style that you are using. Please see FedCite for specific advice and examples.
If you have used GenAI indirectly, for example, brainstorming, editing, or planning see the Declaration of GenAI support tab.
Note: Referencing style guidance is being developed by the various official bodies, and this is interim advice until formal notes can be added.
