Learning Resources for teaching

For teaching staff: managing content for your Learning Resources List

Rolling over Resources Lists each semester

Each semester Moodle master shells are duplicated to create teaching units for the semester.

You can connect a resources list from your previous semesters unit, from the master shell, from another unit shell, or create an entirely new list. Once the list is connected with your unit shell it will reflect the name and semester of the unit (you can use again next time).

What rolls over?   The Learning Resources tool and the embedded resources links placed within the Moodle unit text come over with your content when a Moodle shell is duplicated (ie a Master shell duplicated to a teaching unit shell). The resources links will not be active until a resources list has been rolled over/copied over from a previous teaching or master shell.

What do I need to do?   In the new unit add or go to the Learning Resources tool, repopulate with details of Institute and citation style if required, then go through the process of CREATING A NEW RESOURCE LIST or ROLLING OVER/REUSING A PREVIOUS RESOURCE LIST.

Rollover a Resources List from a previous Teaching period into a new Moodle unit shell

You can use these instructions to reuse a Resource List from a previous teaching period in a new Moodle unit shell. You can also use these instructions to attach one Resource List to other teaching shells, and you have the option of selecting some or all readings to come across from the previous Resources List to your new Resource List.

1. Open the Learning Resources tool in your Moodle unit shell.

2. Open the Learning Resources tool in your Moodle unit shell. Navigate to the 'Resource Lists' button and select 'New List'.

3. Click the PREDEFINED button and select the PREDEFINED* Teaching Period that matches the teaching session of your unit. Click NEXT.

* The PREDEFINED DURATION is set to correspond to Federation University's semester dates. Four weeks is added to the beginning of the semester and two weeks added to the end of the semester to allow for early access to the Moodle Unit and for supplementary exams and assessments. If you feel this doesn't meet your teaching needs, please contact Learning Resources, do not use Custom Dates as this can cause issues for your Resources List and embedded resource links as well as for Learning Resources reporting and analytics.

4. You now need to select the Moodle unit shell from where you want to copy the Resource List that you are wanting to reuse. You do this by clicking on the drop down arrow under UNIT on the left-hand side of the screen and typing the unit code ensuring to put a space between the numbers and letters to find a Teaching shell and no space to find a Master shell.

You then need to select the Resource List from that Moodle shell you have selected that you want to copy into your new Resource List. You can do this by clicking on the drop down arrow under READING LIST on the right-hand side of the screen and selecting a list (usually the most recent list).

Select "Create" to bring a list over.

5. Select some or all resources to bring over to your new list

PLEASE NOTE. To select some resources, expand the weeks or topics and check the boxes next to the individual resources you wish to copy into the new Resource List. Alternatively you can copy ALL Resources to your new Resource List by selecting the ALL button. Select ‘Next’ to finalise

6. You will be returned to the Learning Resources List page. Wait until you receive a system generated email to say that your Learning Resource List has been successfully created. Once you have received this email, please refresh the internet browser that your Moodle window is open in. This will publish your Resource List so that your students can access the list once the teaching period begins. Look for the green flag to appear next to the teaching period. If the Resource List does not auto-publish you will need to manually publish the list so that students will be able to access the resources. To publish the Resource List, please click on the PUBLISH button and ensure that the green flag appears next to the teaching period.

Initially the Resources List will show all resources in the "Ungrouped" folder. You can add and arrange groupings/folders to suit your needs.

You can attach one Resource list to many teaching shells by following these instructions.
