Learning Resources for teaching

For teaching staff: managing content for your Learning Resources List

Adding resources to a Learning Resources List in Moodle

There are two methods to add new resources to your Resources List.

Any item available through QuickSearch (the Library's physical and electonic holdings) in Fulltext can be linked easily through the Learning Resources tool using 'Find an existing resource'. We ask that you search the Library's existing holdings before electing to create a new resource. This is very important.

If the resource you need is not available via the library you can manually type in a new citation and request for it to be digitised using the ADD A NEW RESOURCE function.

1. Find an Existing Resource: add full text journal articles including eJournals, books and book chapters including eBooks, videos, newspapers and many more resource genre's from QuickSearch (which includes Library databases and the Library catalogue).

2. Add a New Resource: request book chapters and excerpts, journal articles, and other material not available in full text to be located and scanned by the Library

Finding an existing reading

1. Open the Learning Resources tool in your Moodle unit shell and click on the ADD button, then click on FIND AN EXISTING RESOURCE.

2. In the next window you will search for the resource that you wish to add to your Resource list. At this point you will need to understand the genre of your resource. Please note that a journal article that is on a website will still be found under the journal article genre. Select FIND.

3. From the LOCATIONS field - select "eReservePlus" to search for resources that already exist in the Learning Resources database. To add resources from the Library's print and electronic holdings please also select "QuickSearch" (the search the Library's holdings). [You can, and should, search both at the same time]. Searching both of these databases first will save you time by not having to create a new request which involves completing all the metadata fields. Selecting from an existing request means all that work is already done and the resource will be automatically approved and available for your students.

4. From the DOCUMENT field select the type of Resource you are searching to add, remembering that even though a journal article or book chapter may be stored on a website, they will still be found under the journal or book chapter genres.

From the TERMS field select a term to search on. The best term to search on will be the article title or chapter title however, you can also search by other terms such as book or journal title or author names. If you are having trouble searching for something you know is in the Library's collections, please contact Learning Resources for support.

5. Enter the search terms [in the example the starting words of the article title] and click 'Find'.

6. Assess the records returned. You can view the item before adding it by clicking the world icon. Select the resources by clicking the tick in box.

7. Once added, the item will go into the 'Ungrouped resources' folder

Ensure that all the metadata(details) you enter is correct as this will inform the citation that your students will rely on.
