Introduction

This course is designed to provide current and future tertiary educators with the capacity to create engaging, innovative and quality tertiary teaching and learning environments for adult learners, and to develop your professional academic integrity through creating a professional portfolio and engaging with the scholarship of learning and teaching.

EDGCT 5007 focuses on building a theory based foundation to explore the dynamics of learning, teaching and assessment - worth 15 credit points.

EDGCT 5008 and EDGCT 5009 focus on effective learning and teaching in tertiary environments, in various delivery modes, and with varying different roles. It also focuses on you as a professional practitioner and your place within the tertiary sector both locally, nationally and internationally - each worth 15 credit points.

EDGCT 5010 focuses on engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning - worth 15 credit points.

This postgraduate course aligns with the Institute of Education, Arts and Community, however is delivered by lecturers within the Centre for Academic Development. Its primary focus is to up-skill university staff with opportunities to develop their teaching skills to complement and enhance their discipline expertise.

What you can expect from us:

To communicate with you about what you need to do to keep on track: give you reminders about what is important for you to notice or to do.
To give you feedback about how you're going with the learning tasks you are undertaking.
To respond to your forum posts and emails, within two working days.
We will use the Moodle News forums to give you any updates or new information you need to know.

Learner expectations

In an online environment, it can be a challenge to feel that sense of camaraderie or community that is associated with face-to-face learning environments. Therefore it is important to consistently participate in the communicative activities set to ensure your 'voice' is heard, and you acknowledge the 'voices' of others as part of the learning process. Each unit has a number of online discussion forums, peer activities and/or synchronous virtual sessions scheduled to ensure that you can regularly engage with your peers to maximise learning.

What we expect from you:

Work consistently. Online learning can be very different from traditional face-to-face learning, so be prepared to rethink your plan of attack. Check out the resource Tips for Studying Online which is a collation of feedback from previous students on how to manage your online learning time and plan a study schedule.
Be committed to the course. We all fall behind from time to time, but if the gap becomes too big, catching up can sometimes be difficult. The majority of students juggle a teaching load and family commitments, so we understand the additional strain that study can bring. If you are struggling at any time, please do not hesitate to contact the Course Coordinator to explore your options. The workload for a unit of study at Federation is 150 hours of learning across the semester, This equates to approximately 10-12 hours per week over the 12 weeks (includes time for optional extension activities and assessment tasks).
Engage and connect consistently with this site. Check it frequently, keep up with the things other students are saying in each unit’s General Discussion Forum, module specific forums, and read the News Forum items. Stay in touch!
Use the General Discussion Forum to post any questions you might have about a unit. If you have a question or are confused about something, it is highly likely that others have the same issue and will appreciate having it clarified. There is no such thing as a silly question, so don't hesitate to ask about anything that is on your mind.
